Record Description Images supplied by Mike Kightly from Northampton. Images and supplied information added by S Eastmead. Mike Kightly Email: I have attached photos I took while out walking, the ones on large rock on stream side are about half way up Slei Gill, think there were some on water side as well, other with framed name of Siddle, is a bit further up the gill on side of path, job to see at first, I think there was someone called Siddle up at Booze in the mining days, but not sure.

Information supplied by Alan Mills(SWAAG): I looked at this stone some time ago and tried to identify J Siddle(Image 1 and 2). The only candidate I could find in the 1901 census is: Joseph Siddle, age 16, born Arkengarthdale, working as an Agricultural Labourer in Booze. In 1891 he was living with his grandmother Ann Siddle, widow, 53, at High Green. It seems likely that this is him. Locally, it is said that these stones were carved by those about to leave the dale, due to the lack of work as the lead mining declined. See Census and Family Tree data in images below: Joseph Siddle married Martha Longstaff, Q2, 1920, Reeth Reg'n District. He married at 35, she at 47

Further information from Christine at http://www.dalesgenealogy.com: Joseph was the illegitimate son of Isabella Siddle, and Jonathan Raisbeck (who appears to be living next door in 1891). Joseph was born 11 Jan 1885 and bapt the same day at St. Mary's.
